How to Choose the Best Inverter for Your Home in Mangalore

Coastal Dakshina Kannada gets long monsoon outages and heavy summer load-shedding. This guide walks through exactly how we size an inverter for a Mangalore home — the calculation, the trade-offs, and what to avoid.

Step 1 — Add up the load you actually want backed up

An inverter is sized in VA (volt-amperes), and that number comes from your load, not from the size of your house. List only the appliances that must keep running during an outage — fans, lights, the router, a TV, maybe a mixer.

Add up the wattage, then divide by a power factor of 0.8. A typical Mangalore two-bedroom home running 4 fans (280 W), 8 LED lights (80 W), a router (20 W) and a TV (100 W) draws about 480 W — roughly 600 VA. A 700–900 VA inverter covers it comfortably with headroom.

  • Ceiling fan — 70 W each
  • LED bulb / tube — 9–20 W each
  • Wi-Fi router and set-top box — 20–30 W
  • LED television — 80–120 W
  • Refrigerator — 150–250 W running, but 3× that at start-up

Step 2 — Sine wave or square wave?

Pure sine wave inverters produce the same clean waveform as the grid. Square wave (and modified square wave) units are cheaper but produce a choppy output.

For anything with a motor or a sensitive board — refrigerators, mixers, CPAP machines, computers, modern LED TVs, RO purifiers — buy pure sine wave. Square wave units hum through fans, run motors hotter and shorten appliance life. In practice we only recommend square wave for a bare lights-and-fans backup on a tight budget.

Step 3 — Match the battery to the backup hours you need

The inverter decides what you can run; the battery decides how long. Backup hours ≈ (battery Ah × 12 × 0.8) ÷ load in watts.

A 150 Ah tubular battery on a 480 W load gives roughly three hours of real-world backup. Two batteries in a 24 V system double that. Tubular batteries suit Mangalore's humid coastal climate far better than flat-plate automotive-style batteries, which degrade faster under deep cycling.

  • 100 Ah — light backup, 1.5–2 hours on a small load
  • 150 Ah — the standard choice for a family home
  • 200 Ah — long outages, larger loads, work-from-home setups

Step 4 — Installation details that decide reliability

Most inverter complaints we attend are installation faults, not product faults. The battery needs ventilation and must never sit in a closed cupboard. The backup circuit should be separate and properly earthed, with an MCB in line. Cable gauge matters — undersized cable drops voltage and cooks the terminals.

We do the load survey, wiring, earthing and a live backup-time demonstration at handover, and we register the warranty in your name on the spot.

Frequently asked questions

What size inverter do I need for a 2 BHK home in Mangalore?
For fans, lights, a router and a TV, a 700–900 VA pure sine wave inverter with a 150 Ah tubular battery is the usual fit. Add a refrigerator and you should move to 1100–1500 VA because of the compressor's start-up surge.
Is a pure sine wave inverter worth the extra cost?
Yes for almost every home. It runs motors and electronics cooler and quieter, avoids the hum in fans, and protects refrigerators, RO purifiers and computers. The price difference is usually recovered in appliance life alone.
How long does an inverter battery last in coastal Karnataka?
A good tubular battery lasts about 4–5 years in Mangalore's humid climate if the water level is topped up and the unit is ventilated. Flat-plate batteries typically last 2–3 years under the same conditions.
Do you install inverters at home in Mangalore?
Yes. Our own technicians handle the load survey, wiring, earthing and demonstration across Mangalore and Dakshina Kannada. Call +91 91641 95516 to book a site visit.
